Tre Cime di Lavaredo

The Tre Cime di Lavaredo or Drei Zinnen are three peaks that could be considered one of the most emblematic and well-known mountain areas of the Dolomites. The peaks, that seem like towers, are only accessible by climbing, but you can make a circular hike around them to admire the peaks as well as the nice views of the valleys around. This mountain area is located in Italy at the border between South Tyrol and Belluno, which is the linguistic boundary between German-speaking and Italian-speaking majorities. That’s why you can find the names of the huts, mountains, etc in both languages.

As the Tre Cime di Lavaredo are very famous, it can be very crowded in summer. The first section of the path was full of people, not only by hikers, but tourist who just want to take a little walk to admire the peaks. We recommend to do the circular route to enjoy also the north side of the peaks and because after the Lavaredo hut, the path became quieter and even quieter after the Dreizinnenhütte or Rifugio Antonio Locatelli.

00:00 Start. We start the hike form the hut besides the parking lot, the Auronzo Hütte or Rifugio Auronzo, and follow the forest road that starts behind it.

00:15 Detour to a viewpoint. We take a detour to a marked viewpoint, reachable in just 5 min, where we can enjoy the views away of the crowd and then we come back to the main road. After this point, the trail ascent a bit.

00:35 Lavaredohütte or Rifugio Lavaredo. After the hut, the road is not so crowded, but we take a small path to avoid it for some minutes.

00:50 Pass Paternsattel or Forcella Lavaredo. This mountain pass is the highest point of the day, we are pretty close to the peaks and can see them from very short distance.

01:25 Dreizinnenhütte or Rifugio Antonio Locatelli. We take a small detour to reach the hut and enjoy the views of the valleys nearby. After the hut, we follow a narrow path at the north side of the peaks. Most of the people come back to the Auronzo hut through the road, because it is easier and faster which make this part quieter.

02:25 Zinnenseen. We pass through another hut and can see the three little lakes named Zinnenseen on the left of the path. The path gets a bit steeper until it reaches the pass Forcella Col di Mezzo and then turns around the peaks to reach the parking lot.

03:00 Finish.
