axamer lizum

Axamer Lizum is a very complete ski resort, where you can enjoy both freeride routes for advanced skiers and a snowpark for beginners. It is located at the foot of the Kalkkögel, an impressive mountain range formed by couloirs and walls. In Axamer Lizum the alpine skiing events of the 1964 and 1967 Olympic Games were contested, all except the men's descent that took place in Patscherkofel. These competitions took place on the tracks "Reisenenslalom Herren" for men and "Reisenenslalom Damen" for women.

40km distributed in 7 blue pistes, 9 red, 1 black and 6 freeride routes. It is a medium-sized resort where the descents are not especially long, except for those that allow you to go down from "Olympiabahn" to the base of the ski resort.

It is a medium difficulty ski resort, in which the skiing kilometers of red slopes predominate, although these are not especially complicated. In addition, the beginner’s area is quite limited.

The diversity of slopes is not high, since most are red and are in the area of "Schönbodenbahn". However, the descent of the "Birgitzköpfl" chairlift and the freeride options give it more range when there is many snow.

The chairlifts are quite slow and old, most are two people chairlifts. The train that goes up from the base of Axamer Lizum to the highest area is quite old and the waiting time is long.

The adult ticket is 34€ per day, quite cheap compared with nearby ski resorts in terms of the km/price ratio. In addition, there are cheaper tickets starting at 11 am, as well as discounts for senior, young and child.

Axamer Lizum is located 30 minutes by car from the center of Innsbruck and less than 10km from the village Axams. The access is through a road in perfect condition, although the parking is small. It can also be reached by free bus (L1) from Innsbruck.

The ski resort has six marked routes, however, in all the ski resort there are infinite possibilities of riding some powder close to the slopes. In addition, the whole area around the train track can be ride.

The best views of the ski resort are on the train "Olympiabahn". On the left, there is a very characteristic mountain range (Kalkkögel) full of couloirs and walls, on the other side is the ski resort Schlick 2000. The "Panoramarestaurant" has nice views of the surroundings of the Schwarzhorn peak. The views of Innsbruck and the Nordkette mountain range from the "Schönbodenbahn" area are also nice.

Axamer Lizum has a very easy and fun Snowpark, perfect for beginners. Another area of interest is "Birgitzköpfl", from where you can go to Muttereralmpark ski resort by an old not groomed track, from there, there are free buses that take you back to Axamer Lizum.

The best:

  • In Axamer Lizum it is quite easy to find not steep freeride areas, perfect for beginners in powder.
  • We like the blue slope "Abfahrt Damen", it is quite long, it has several changes of inclination and in spite of being blue it has enough steepness.
  • Due to its size and freeride, it is our favorite ski resort of the closest to Innsbruck.
